Shining a light on a much loved community centre

Mirehouse Community Centre Association (MCCA) in Whitehaven, are based in the heart of the ‘09’ (west) side of the Mirehouse estate, Whitehaven.  They provide extensive opportunities for recreation and vocational activities for all ages, including benefits advice, online training, children’s projects, and family holidays.  The Men in Sheds project and Mirehouse Residents Group are also based there.

The Community Centre is well used on a daily basis but was becoming shabby in appearance due to usage. Via assistance from Well Whitehaven they linked in with Cumbria Exchange to help start off their refurbishment with some improved lighting, and if possible hand dryers.

A call was put out and PPS, a member of the Shepley Group, made contact with Mirehouse Community Centre Association to offer assistance to the refurbishment project.

Representatives from Shepley and PPS visited the Community Centre to gauge the scope of the project and provided an indication of what could potentially be achieved depending on manpower availability and in-kind support from their suppliers.

All the labour was undertaken by Shepley Engineers Ltd and Edmundson Electrical Ltd (Carlisle) donated an in kind value of £2,000 in the form of electrical equipment, lights and hand dryers to make the community centre brighter and fit with health and safety regulations.

They now have marvellous lighting , that has been a great improvement to the whole facility – it’s really lifted the whole building.

Carl Walmsley, Chair of MCCA said “I would like to say a huge thank you to the Shepley Group for being involved in our project and Edmundson Electrical (Carlisle) for donation of equipment.  With new lights and hand dryers installed in the toilets, and new outside lights, we are now a safer and more hygienic centre for all to use at no cost to our tight budget.”

Mike Brown, Senior Construction Manager, PPS/Shepley Engineers Ltd said “It was a pleasure to be able to assist with the refurbishment of this valuable community facility.  Our in-kind support, together with the equipment from Edmundson’s, will allow the financial support secured from Well Whitehaven to go much further.  Looking forward to seeing a fully refurbished facility in the near future.”

What was achieved?

Collaboration between PPS/Shepley and one of it’s suppliers Edmundson Electrical Ltd (Carlisle) successfully delivered part of the community centre refurbishment which then maximised use of the grant funding already secured for the project.
